Halal courtship — what is allowed, what is not, and what nobody mentions

The rule takes a few lines. What causes trouble is the in-between: the video call, the late-night message, the meeting "just to see each other". Here is where the line falls, and why it is drawn there.
Seeking a spouse is encouraged in Islam. What is regulated is not the search, it is being alone together. Confusing the two makes serious people give up, and lets others cross a line without noticing.
The principle, in one sentence
A man and a woman who could marry each other do not stay alone without a witness. This is the rule of khalwa, seclusion in pairs, and it is the only real line. Everything else — the number of exchanges, their length, their tone — is judged from there.
The rule does not guard against an imaginary sin. It protects two reputations, in a process where either can be destroyed by a rumour, and above all it protects the more exposed of the two people.
What is allowed
Talking about what builds a marriage: religious practice, family situation, work, where one lives, the relationship to money, the wish for children, health where it affects a shared future. These subjects are not intrusive — they are the very object of the process, and avoiding them wastes months.
Meeting in the presence of a third party. The wali, a brother, a family friend: one person present is enough to lift the seclusion. A meeting in a busy public place is also accepted by a large share of contemporary jurists.
Looking at the suitor’s face and hands. A well-known prophetic narration encourages a man considering marriage to see the woman he is asking for, "for that is more likely to create harmony between them". Looking is therefore permitted in this precise setting, and is even recommended.
What is not
Being alone together, physically or through a long private call. A video call between two people, late, that nobody knows about, reproduces exactly what the rule sets aside. The medium changes; the situation does not.
Physical contact, including a handshake, according to the majority position. Exchanging private photographs. A conversation drifting towards flirtation, compliments about the body, plans of intimacy. And the most frequent of all: keeping up a relationship that lasts months without ever making a proposal.
What nobody mentions
A halal relationship can be abusive. A man who demands extra photographs, who isolates a woman from her family, who multiplies exchanges while never speaking of marriage, sometimes respects the letter of every rule. The form is intact; the intention is not.
The most reliable sign is not the vocabulary used, it is acceptance of the framework. A serious person accepts the presence of the wali, accepts that the process is known to his own family, and accepts being asked precise questions. Someone who asks for discretion is in fact asking for the absence of witnesses.
On Mouqaabala
Exchanges begin in front of the wali as soon as a connection is made. The number of messages before a decision is bounded — an endless conversation ends up replacing the process instead of serving it. This is not an added religious constraint; it is the rule described above, translated into a product.
