How to open a halal marriage proposal

Published on 3 min read

The first message decides what follows. What to put in it, what to leave out, and why the longest proposals are rarely the best ones.

There are two ways to botch a first approach: writing three hollow lines, or writing a two-page letter. The first says nothing; the second says too much before being invited to.

What a proposal is for

A proposal does not have to convince. It has to establish three things, and then stop.

  • That you read the profile. A sentence that could have been sent to anyone is treated as such.
  • That your situation is clear. Age, city, occupation, family situation: these are facts, they fit in two lines, and their absence is noticed immediately.
  • That your intention is marriage, within a real timeframe. "In time, God willing" means nothing. "Within the year, I am looking to marry" means something.

The rest — values, plans, religious practice — emerges in the exchange. Putting it in the proposal answers questions nobody has asked yet.

Tone

Courteous, without emphasis. No compliment on appearance, never in a first message: it is the most reliable signal that an approach is not matrimonial. No flood of religious formulas either — three invocations in a six-line message read as a badge of seriousness applied in haste, and the effect is the opposite of the one intended.

What works is short, precise, polite, and ends with an open question. One question, not four.

What not to ask for straight away

The phone number. It is the request that wrecks the most exchanges, and on Mouqaabala it is blocked throughout the discovery phase: the message is not delivered and an explanation appears. That is not a punishment, it is the framework — contact details are exchanged once the wali is present, and he is present at the end of discovery.

Extra photos, likewise. They appear inside the conversation once reviewed, and demanding them moves the exchange onto ground that is not marriage.

When the proposal goes through the wali

On Mouqaabala, a request addressed to a woman is submitted to her wali before the conversation opens. He gives a reasoned opinion: the reason is mandatory, and it is passed on.

Which means your first message is read by two people. That is not a reason to change its tone — it is a reason to write it as though someone from the family were going to read it, which is exactly the case.

If the answer is no

A refusal does not invite a follow-up. On the platform the question does not even arise: after a refusal, the same pair cannot make contact again for a month, in either direction. The rule exists because persistence dressed up as a fresh request is the most reported behaviour on this kind of service.

Nor is a refusal a judgement. Out of sixty profile fields, one that does not line up — a city, a plan about children, an availability — is enough for an introduction to make no sense. Better to learn it at the first message than at the fifteenth.

In short

Short, factual, polite, one question at the end. The rest plays out over the fifteen messages that follow, and the full sequence is described here.
